A visitor’s guide to Ireland’s traditional B&Bs

Irish B&Bs offer more than just a place to rest—they’re a gateway to authentic Irish hospitality. Usually family-run and set in charming homes, these accommodations provide a personal touch that large hotels can’t match.

Your hosts aren’t just service providers; they’re local experts eager to share their knowledge and ensure your stay is memorable. They know what brings comfort after a long day of hiking–a hot cup of tea, a place to clean and dry your boots. And best of all, they work with us to provide luggage transfers and to assist you in finding food.

While we specialise in designing tailor-made tours that can incorporate more luxurious accommodation options where available, it’s worth noting that in small villages and along hiking routes, lodging choices may be limited by trail proximity and dining options.

Room Features & Amenities

ROOM SIZES:

Bedrooms and bathrooms are typically more compact than North American rooms, reflecting traditional Irish home architecture. However, they’re thoughtfully arranged to maximise space.

BED TYPES:
Double beds are standard UK/Irish doubles (4’6″ wide, smaller than American queens)

Twin rooms feature two single beds.

King-size beds are less common but available in some select B&Bs.

STANDARD AMENITIES:

Electric kettle with tea and possibly instant coffee (Nescafe or similar)
Small Television (usually with local channels and some satellite options)
Hair dryer
Wardrobe or clothing storage

Bathroom Essentials

Bathroom arrangements can differ significantly from what international visitors expect.

EN-SUITE VS SHARED:

While most modern B&Bs offer en-suite bathrooms, some traditional properties may have shared facilities. Your booking will specify this.

BATHROOM FEATURES:
Electric showers are common (activated by pulling a cord or pressing a button).
Water pressure may be lower than you’re used to.
Outlet for shavers only (marked 110V/220V).
Showers may be smaller than North American standards.

PROVIDED ITEMS:
Bath towels and hand towels
Basic toiletries (soap, shower gel, shampoo)
Toilet paper

Note: It is common in Europe not to provide personal washcloths–you will need to bring your own.

The Full Irish Breakfast

Breakfast is a highlight of the B&B experience, typically served between 8:00-10:00. Your B&B host will usually explain breakfast times when you check-in. This is the time to ask them for special requests, such as an early breakfast or dietary requirements.

Unless you ask for something different, expect some combination of the following:
Toast with butter and preserves
Juice, tea, and coffee
TRADITIONAL FULL IRISH:
Eggs cooked to order
Bacon (back bacon, different from American-style)
Sausages
Black and white pudding
Grilled tomatoes and mushrooms

Most B&Bs also serve cereals and muesli, fresh fruit and yoghurt but sometimes you may need to ask for this “lighter option” in advance.

General Information

CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT:

Check-in usually between 14:00-18:00 (communicate late arrivals)
Check-out typically by 10:00-11:00

COMMON AREAS:

Many B&Bs have guest lounges where you can relax and visit with other guests

WI-FI:

Free Wi-Fi is standard, though speeds may vary in rural locations

THOUGHTFUL GUESTS:
Your hosts will often be happy to provide local recommendations and directions. In return, please be a gracious guest by removing muddy boots upon entry, participate in conversation at breakfast, and observe quiet hours as directed.
